Passe Bateau Sud: a powerful dive into the deep blue sea of Mayotte

Among the most renowned sites in southern Mayotte, Passe Bateau Sud is a must-see dive for thrill seekers and those who enjoy close encounters with wildlife. Located in the southern coral reef, this site offers the most spectacular features of the Mayotte lagoon: rich relief, diverse fauna and powerful currents.

A majestic site with many faces

The topography of Passe Bateau Sud features an imposing drop-off that begins at around 20 metres. It continues as a gentle slope and then into vertiginous cliffs, punctuated by faults, small caves and sandy areas where rays and turtles often rest.

The light is excellent, and the diversity of the underwater landscapes allows divers to adapt their dive to their level: peaceful observation in the first 20 metres, or more technical exploration in the deeper areas.

Sharks and mobile fauna

One of the site’s main attractions is the regular presence of sharks. In nearly four out of five dives, divers encounter blacktip reef sharks and sometimes grey reef sharks. They swim along the drop-off, sometimes in the blue, sometimes just above the sand. These encounters, which are always impressive, take place in controlled and safe conditions.

In addition to sharks, Passe Bateau Sud is a great place to observe schools of pelagic fish, trevally, barracuda, and tropical reef fish such as butterflyfish, triggerfish, lionfish, and sometimes leaf fish and ribbon moray eels.

A site sensitive to currents

This site may be inaccessible on certain days due to strong currents generated by the tides. These conditions are sometimes sought after for drift dives, but they require strict supervision and a minimum level of experience (often PE40 required).

Le Lagon Maore organises dives according to the weather, tide coefficients and the profile of the group.

A memorable dive on all levels

For divers looking for a memorable dive, Passe Bateau Sud offers intense moments and spectacular seascapes. Its strength lies in the diversity of its profiles: from beginners with expert supervision to experts in search of mobile wildlife, everyone can enjoy a powerful dive.
